Söndörgő

Family tradition as well as their enchantment with Southern Slavic folk music clearly directed them onto a path of preserving and reinvigorating archaic traditions.

The band was founded in 1995 in Szentendre. The Eredics brothers, who have relatives in the Vujicsics band, met and began making music together with Attila Buzás during high school years. Family tradition as well as their enchantment with Southern Slavic folk music clearly directed them onto a path of preserving and reinvigorating archaic traditions.

In contrast to most groups playing Balkan music, Söndörgő is not playing brass band music, but rather it is a tamburitza band with a technical virtuosity and a fresh interpretation. The tambura is a small and agile plucked instrument similar to the mandolin which is occasionally supplemented by wind instruments and accordion. They are capable of bringing to life the hidden gems of different Balkan sounds. After a collaboration with Ferus Mustafov, the ’cocek king’ of the Macedonian gipsy music on two albums (Oj Stari, 2001 and Oj Javore, 2005), they released the album entitled Söndörgő & Ferus Mustafov In Concert. This album proved to be a breakthrough on the global world music scene as well, eliciting praise in renowned music journals and resulting in a number of invitations to concert halls. Their new album ‘Tamburising – Lost Music of the Balkans’ featuring great vocals from Antal Kovács and Kátya Tompos was released by Harmonia Mundi/World Village in 2011. This album has brought the music of Sündörgő to 60 countries making the band one of the most sought after products of Hungary.
